Abstract

The flora within Protected Areas (PAs) plays a crucial role in providing essential resources for wildlife, including forage, shelter, breeding sites, and water. However, the current understanding of the floristic composition of Mikumi National Park (MINAPA) is limited, hindering the implementation of effective conservation and management strategies. This study aimed to update the plant species records for MINAPA based on the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (APG) IV classification by analyzing the data from unpublished surveys conducted between the 1960s and 1990s, as well as a more recent survey in 2021. A total of 951 species records were compiled, representing 504 genera and 124 families. Among these, 35 species were listed in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list with 15 (1.6%) classified as Vulnerable (VU), 7 (0.7%) as Near Threatened (NT), 10 (1.0%) as Endangered (EN), and 3 (0.3%) as Critically Endangered (CR). Additionally, 16 species were found to be endemic to Tanzania. The data from the 1960s-1990s surveys revealed 778 species distributed across 421 genera and 106 families with 12 (1.5%) listed in the IUCN red list. Notably, 173 species (18.2%) were newly recorded in 2021 and distributed across 148 genera and 58 families. Among these newly recorded species, 21 (2.2%) were listed in the IUCN red list and 13 were found to be endemic to Tanzania. This study significantly enhanced our understanding of the flora of MINAPA and emphasized the importance of conducting regular surveys to update the status of floral resources in PAs, particularly where reports are based on outdated taxonomic nomenclature. These findings will contribute to the advancement of scientific research and management techniques, particularly in the context of ongoing changes in climatic conditions.

Introduction

Biological assessments, such as the analysis of floral composition, species diversity, and vegetation structure, are essential for gaining a comprehensive understanding of ecological characteristics and ecosystem functions, making them crucial for effective ecosystem management (Ali et al., 2017; Gurr et al., 2017; Kremen, 2005). Studies on floral composition are particularly vital as they provide insights into ecological characteristics and the potential for ecosystem functioning (Fiedler et al., 2008). The flora within ecosystems serves as a vital resource for wildlife, providing essential elements, such as forage, shelter, breeding sites, and water. Conducting vegetation surveys aids in identifying plant diversity (Koyama et al., 2021), which forms the foundation for managing biodiversity elements and monitoring changes over time (Castri, 1990; Spellerberg, 2005). This research was integral to fulfilling wildlife research obligations in Tanzania (Dowie, 2011; United Republic of Tanzania, 2001) and aligned with the objectives of the conservation of biological diversity at large (Lausche, 2011). It also contributed to meeting the requirements of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) (2012) (Day et al., 2012), which emphasized the need for facilitating comprehensive inventories of all taxa in areas of high conservation priority, including specific ecosystems. Mikumi National Park (MINAPA) is one of the most significant Protected Areas (PAs) in Southern Tanzania and is currently among the four priority areas targeted by the Government of Tanzania for increased tourism and improved community livelihoods (Ndossy, 2020; Vedeld et al., 2012). Therefore, gaining a clear understanding of the vegetation resources in MINAPA will not only enhance resource management techniques, but also contribute to local and international knowledge regarding species-specific conservation status, thus potentially attracting investment in scientific research.

This study presented a comprehensive and updated overview of the flora in MINAPA, utilizing the currently accepted names of families, genera, and species for the recorded plants. It also assessed the contribution of the current surveys to the existing plant records for MINAPA based on the classification of the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (AGP) IV for the orders and families of flowering plants. The study focused on the currently accepted family classification and taxonomic nomenclature, effectively building upon previous research, including the works of Richard Wingfield in 1975 and those of John Lovett and Guy Norton (JL-GN), among others, pertaining to the plant species reported to exist within MINAPA. It consolidated the floristic composition from previous surveys and integrated it with the most recent surveys conducted in 2021 with specific objectives to: 1) gather available published and unpublished survey data in MINAPA; 2) ascertain the current vegetation composition of MINAPA; and 3) produce the most up-to-date floristic checklist of MINAPA.

Historical Context and Research Background

MINAPA boasts diverse morphological features and distinct climate regimes, giving rise to unique habitat types and harboring both endangered and endemic plant species. The central and northern regions are characterized by savanna landscapes interspersed with Acacia (sensu lato), Adansonia digitata L. (baobab), Tamarindus indica (L), and various palm tree species, while the southern part is defined by Miombo vegetation. Additionally, the Malunde Mountains (07° 24' S, 37° 18' E) encompass a 450-hectare patch of Afromontane rainforest in the southeast, forming part of the Eastern Arc Mountains. This area is distinguished by its Afromontane rainforest, featuring canopy tree species ranging from 20 to 40 m in height with previous studies indicating a rich biodiversity and the presence of numerous threatened species (Lovett & Norton, 1989). Habitat types within MINAPA encompass woodland, open woodland, wooded grassland, floodplain, riverine, and Afromontane forests. The park supports a wide array of fauna and flora, underscoring its significant conservation value.

Vegetation surveys in MINAPA have been conducted in fragmented and often unpublished manners, resulting in disorganized and incomplete information on plant species. Consequently, there is a noticeable gap in available information, including a lack of comprehensive literature reviews and field surveys covering the entire area. The earliest plant species records for MINAPA date back to the 1960s and 1970s. Notable contributors during this period include J. Procter, S. A. Renvoizem, P. Ole. Sayalel, Herbert Lyaruu, Richard Wingfield, Guy Norton, L. B. Mwasumbi, and the Animal Behavior Research Unit (ABRU) team led by John Lovett and Guy Norton (JL-GN), among others. However, most of the early collections have been concentrated in the central, central-eastern, and along the Iringa Road areas of MINAPA, including Vuma Hills forests, Kikwaraza, Msindazi, Kikobora, Mkuluwili, Chamgore, and Mkata floodplain (ranging in altitude from 300 to 800 m). Specimens have been deposited at the herbarium of the University of Dar es Salaam with several also being kept at MINAPA. Hard copies of previously recorded species records have been obtained from the ecology office of MINAPA. The classification methods used in these previous lists are outdated and do not adhere to the modern classification of the APG for the orders and families of flowering plants (APG, 2016). The most recent vegetation assessment has been conducted by the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) in 2021 under the Resilient Natural Resources Management for Tourism and Growth (REGROW) project. Therefore, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive review to organize data on flora resources, including an analysis of the available floristic records to gain a detailed understanding of the flora. This review of plant species represents the first attempt in MINAPA to consolidate information from various vegetation studies into one comprehensive work, providing an updated checklist and conducting a quantitative analysis of the flora in MINAPA, a historically and ecologically significant wildlife conservation area in southern Tanzania.

Methodology

Study Area

MINAPA is the ninth-largest national park in Tanzania situated in the central-eastern part of the country and covering an area of 3,230 km². It spans from 37° 00' to 37° 30' E and from 7° 00' to 7° 45' S (refer to Figure 1), extending westward towards Nyerere National Park. The park is home to a diverse array of fauna and flora, underscoring its significant conservation importance. The altitude within the park ranges from 430 m above sea level (asl) in the south to 1270 m asl at the peak of Malundwe Mountain, which is the only part of the Eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania free from uncontrolled human disturbance. The mean annual rainfall is approximately 860 mm and the average annual temperature is 25°C. MINAPA is characterized by 3 major catchment river systems: the Ruaha, Ruvu, and Wami catchments (see Figure 1). The Ruaha River catchment flows southward from the southwestern portion of the park to the Ruaha River system, the Ruvu River catchment flows southeast from Malundwe Mountains to the Ruvu River system, and the Wami River catchment flows northward along with the Mkata River system in about a third of the northern portion of the park into the Wami River system.

Data Collection

Plant species data for the MINAPA checklist were gathered from 3 primary sources. Firstly, collection records from previous surveys conducted between the 1960s and 1990s were utilized. This involved conducting a literature search and verifying specimens in the herbarium. All plant species names were digitized in an Excel spreadsheet and the species information was extracted from the existing voucher specimens both at the herbarium in MINAPA and the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Secondly, the collection records from recent floristic surveys carried out in 2021 were utilized. Various vegetation patches were visited and surveyed during two (dry and wet) seasons to cover areas with few or no previous collections. The surveys involved plot sampling, random walks for recording plant species, and documentation of specimen details in a notebook. Information, such as life form, habitat, and collector details, were recorded in the field where possible. The 2021 records were conducted by the TAWIRI during the implementation of the REGROW project under the supervision of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism (MNRT) in Tanzania. Sampling sites were selected based on vegetation homogeneity/heterogeneity and nested sampling plots were established along transects. The sampling plots were measured 20×20 m (400 m²) for trees, 5×5 m (25 m²) for shrubs, and 1×1 m (1 m²) for herbs and grasses (Anitha et al., 2009). All plant species within each plot, including habitat types, were identified with the assistance of experienced botanists. The unique species found outside the plots were also recorded. The species that were not well identified in the field were collected and later verified using voucher specimens at the herbarium of the University of Dar es Salaam and the National Herbarium of Tanzania (NHT).

Data Analysis

A comprehensive review of plant species records from all surveys, including those from the 1960s-1990s and the recent 2021 surveys, was conducted. Taxonomic contributions, encompassing families, genera, and species, were compiled and the nomenclatures were updated in accordance with the APG classification for the orders and families of flowering plants (APG, 2016). Family and species circumscription, spelling, authorities, and synonyms of scientific names were revised based on online databases, such as the African Plant Database (www.villege.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/africa) and the Catalogue of Life (Hobern et al., 2021). Furthermore, the conservation status of species was determined based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list of Threatened Species (TS) (IUCN, 2019).

In the updated checklist we developed, the currently accepted name for each species was first provided followed by any synonyms (usually the old names). Additionally, the species list was categorized into major groups, namely Pteridophytes, Dicotyledons, and Monocotyledons. Plant families were arranged alphabetically within each major plant group followed by genera and species (also alphabetically) within each family.

We compiled the habitats where the species were recorded to understand the contribution of prominent habitat types in terms of taxonomic richness. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate the proportional taxonomic contribution per survey period/group. Assessment of the conservation status provided by IUCN was carried out using R software, version 4.2.1 (R Core Team, 2022). The importance of each family and genus was measured by the proportion of their species and genera to the total number of recorded species, genera, and families in the study area (ratios of species/genera, species/families, and genera/families). We also evaluated the proportional contribution of the current species records to the MINAPA flora in terms of species listed in the IUCN red lists as Vulnerable (VU), Endangered (EN), and Critically Endangered (CR).

Research Findings

Historical Flora Surveys in MINAPA

Figure 2 displays the significant historical surveys conducted by various scientists. The earliest known survey in this study was conducted by J. Procter in 1965 followed by S. A. Renvoize in 1968, contributing 1.8% and 1.5% to the species checklist, respectively (Figure 2). P. Ole. Sayalel had the highest number of records in 1975, 1976, and 1977, accounting for 23.6% of the records. This was followed by Richard Wingfield in 1975 and the Animal Behavior Research Unit (ABRU) team formed by John Lovertt, Guy Norton, and Herbert Lyaruu in 1977 (Figure 2). Collectively, the older records contributed 79.7%, while the most recent records in 2021 (Bukombe et al.) supported by the REGROW project contributed an additional 20.3% to the records for MINAPA (Figure 2).

Families of the Floristic Records from the 1960s-1990s Surveys

The old species records referring to the plants recorded from the 1960s to the 1990s totaled approximately 778 species distributed across 421 genera and 106 families (Table 6). These records were predominantly composed of dicotyledonous plants. The 8 major families (each with at least 25 species) accounted for 43% of the total genera and 50% of the total species (Table 1A). Among these, the most dominant family was Poaceae, representing 12% of all genera and 15% of all species followed by the family Fabaceae, which accounted for 7% of all genera and 8% of all species.

Major Families of the Newly Recorded Plants in 2021 Surveys

A total of approximately 173 newly recorded species in 2021 were distributed across 147 genera and 58 families. These species were additions to the previous list of records from the 1960s to the 1990s. They belonged to 48 families of dicotyledonous plants, 9 families of monocotyledonous plants, and 1 family of pteridophytes. Similar to the old records, the new records were predominantly composed of dicotyledons. The top 8 families, which were referred to as major families, each contained at least 6 species. Collectively, these major families accounted for 45% of all genera and 47% of all species (Table 1A). The major families recorded in 2021 were led by the family Rubiaceae, representing 10.2% of all genera and 12.8% of all species followed by the family Annonaceae with 5.4% of all genera and 5.8% of all species.

Major Life Forms

Based on the known plant morphology (life-form) spectra, the updated checklist of plant species in MINAPA could be categorized into 7 groups. The most prevalent life forms were herbs accounting for 407 (43%) of the total number of species followed by trees comprising 295 (31%) species, grasses with 122 (13%) species, shrubs with 8% of the species, sedges with 4.5% of the species, lianas with 3 (0.03%) species, and hemi-climbers with 2 (0.02%) species. In terms of the record status, the life forms of both the new and old records were proportionally similar. However, the records collected in 2021 mostly consisted of trees followed by herbs, whereas the old records included mostly herbs followed by trees (refer to Figure 3).

Plant Species of Conservation Concern

Out of approximately 951 species records in the updated checklist, a total of 35 (3.7%) species were listed in the IUCN red list (refer to Table 4). Among these 35 red-listed species, 15 (1.6%) species were VU, 7 (0.7%) species were NT, 10 (1.0%) species were EN, and 3 (0.3%) species were CR (see Tables A & B of the attached lists). These species were predominantly trees followed by herbs (refer to Table 4).

21 (2.2%) of the total 35 red-listed species records were newly recorded (additional records) in 2021. Additionally, out of the 35 IUCN-listed species, 16 were endemic to Tanzania with only 3 of them recorded in the 1960s-1990s surveys, while 13 species were recorded in the survey conducted in 2021 (refer to Table 5).

Major Habitat Types

The updated checklist encompassed a wide range of habitat types commonly found in MINAPA. Each habitat type had a unique species composition with several species exclusive to specific habitats (refer to Figure 4). While the old records were predominantly from grassland and woodland, the records in 2021 were primarily from woodland and forest. Woodland emerged as the richest habitat type in the area with at least 60 species records. Only one species, Acalypha fruticosa Forssk, was recorded across all habitat types. 14 species, including Abrus fruticulosus Wall. ex-Wight & Arn., Vachellia hockii (De Wild.) Seigler & Ebinger, Senegalia mellifera (Vahl) Seigler & Ebinger, Vachellia sieberiana (DC.) Kyal. & Boatwr., Acalypha neptunica Müll. Arg., Acalypha lanceolata Willd, Achyranthes aspera L., Allophylus africanus P. Beauv., Asparagus setaceus (Kunth) Jessop, Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Del, and Bauhinia petersiana Bolle, were found in both forest and woodland. None of these species were common in both forest and bushland, while Balanites aegyptiaca occurred in both bushland and grassland. Shrubland and woodland shared 9 species (refer to Figure 4), including Albizia anthelmintica Brongn., Albizia gumufera (J. F. Gmel) A. R. Sm, Scleria schimperiana Boeck, Aristida adscensums L., and Barleria fulvostellata C. B. CL.

Discussion of Results & Conclusion

The information on flora resources is crucial for monitoring the effects of climate and land cover changes in various areas, including Protected Areas (PAs), over time (PAs) (Mengistu, 2005). The updated floristic list of MINAPA utilizing the currently accepted nomenclature of families, genera, and species has demonstrated the conservation value of MINAPA in providing sustainable forage and shelter and serving as a healthy water catchment resource for both human and wildlife species. This underscores the critical need to conserve the high species diversity present in MINAPA and across Tanzania, as well as the African region. Many of these species are listed in the IUCN red list, indicating their threatened status in terms of conservation or existence in their natural habitats and the urgent need for sustainable conservation strategies. This work highlighted the importance of MINAPA in preserving species endemism as evidenced by a significant number of endemic plants found in the Eastern Arc Mountains with several endemic species recorded at Malundwe Hill. Malundwe Hill is currently the only part of the eastern mountains that is completely protected, being within the borders of MINAPA (Lovett & Norton, 1989; Norton, 1989). This work is expected to contribute to the improvement of management techniques for vegetation resources (Thackway et al., 2007) and can be a valuable contribution to investment in scientific research and tourism (Buxton et al., 2021). The life-form spectrum presented aligns with the flora of arid areas worldwide (Chidumayo & Gumbo, 2010; Timberlake et al., 2010) and specifically for Southern Tanzania (Bourlière & Hadley, 1970). The predominance of trees, shrubs, shrub/tree, grasses, and herbs is characteristic of savanna woodland where trees and shrubs form a light canopy (Belsky & Canham, 1994; Frost, 1996; Menaut & Lepage, 1995), indicating that MINAPA is indeed in semi-arid conditions with woodland and thickets exhibiting highest and lowest species richness, abundance, and diversity, respectively.

The diverse habitat types depicted in Figure 4 provide a unique composition for each, offering a wide range of plant species resources. As can be seen, the grass family (Poaceae) dominates these habitats, along with other crucial families that support the survival of the resident animals (Bastian, 2013; Tews et al., 2004). The Poaceae family plays a vital ecological role by providing forage for various groups of herbivores (Carballo et al., 2019; Hodkinson, 2018), while the Fabaceae family offers a diverse range of browse species for animals. These are just a few examples that highlight the critical role of the available taxa in MINAPA. It is essential to recognize the importance of conserving these diverse habitats through precise prioritization at a fine scale (Benesperi et al., 2018; Harris et al., 2005; Rouget, 2003) supported by research information. This approach helps prevent the loss of available resources, as well as the protection of endemic and threatened plant species, and ensures the availability of plants required by animals with specialized needs.

Moreover, the substantial increase in the recorded species (approximately 173 additional species) from the recent 2021 survey compared to the previously obtained count (approximately 778 species) in MINAPA, highlights the necessity for regular assessments of vegetation resources to monitor changes in floristic information. To fulfill this requirement, we advocated for a landscape approach to vegetation resource surveys, ensuring a broader coverage of resources needed by the consumer group of animals, particularly at the herbivorous level (DeGraaf & Healy, 1992; Dennis, 2012). Surveys play a crucial role in specific PAs and ecosystems. Regular vegetation surveys will enable a prompt and reliable assessment of the effects of ongoing worldwide climatic variability, which leads to habitat changes (Malhi et al., 2020; Thomas & Gillingham, 2015). Furthermore, consistent vegetation studies will facilitate a deeper understanding of underrepresented taxa, such as monocotyledonous and pteridophytes, due to their insufficient sampling. The limited samples are likely a result of poor road networks that hinder navigation, especially during the wet seasons (Rosell Pagès et al., 2016).
