This study was conducted to apply the landmark-based geometric morphometrics technique to differentiate three species of the genus Paracobitis (P. iranica, P. malapterura and
P. rhadinaeus)in Iran based on their body shape, because previous works, using traditional morphometrics, could not distinct them. A total of 150 specimens were sampled from the Zaringol, Madarsoo, Ghomrood, Kordan Rivers and Chahnimeh reservoir. The left side of the specimens was photographed using a digital camera and then fifteen landmark-points were digitized on two-dimensional images using TpsDig2. Landmark data were analyzed after a generalised procrustes analysis using PCA, CVA and cluster analysis. The patterns of body shape differences among the populations were illustrated in the deformation grids in relation to consensus configuration. The results showed a significant differences among the studied species and their populations in terms of morphological traits (P<0.0001). Some differences were found in the length and depth of head, depth of body, caudal peduncle length and position of eye and position of dorsal fin. The result also showed that P. iranica from Kordan River can be considered to be a distinct taxon compared to the Ghomrood taxon based on its morphological characteristics. In addition, our findings revealed that the geometric morphometrics approach can be a proper tool for morphological and taxonomic studies in species with small sizes including Nemachelinae.

Natural habitats of the Iranian reptiles in many areas of the country are destroying due to several reasons. In such conditions the protected areas can act as the shelter sites for many organisms. Therefore it seems quite necessary that, under management of the department of environment, the reptiles' fauna of these areas, comprehensively be studied and reported. The protected area of Khajeh with 37552 Hectares is located in 70 km west of Sarakhs city. This is one of the most important protected areas of Khorasan Razavi province. In a long term study of the reptiles in this area which lasted 5 years, 11 species of lizards, Paralaudakia erythrogastra, Trapelus agilis, Pseudopus apodus, Tenuidactylus caspius, Cyrtopodion scabrum, Eremias velox, Eremias persica, Mesalina watsonana, Ablepharus pannonicus, Trachylepis aurata, Varanus greseus belonging to 5 families, 7 species of snakes, Typhlops vermicularis, Platyceps rhodorachis, Psammophis schokari, Hemorrhois ravergieri, Malpolon insignitus, Macrovipera lebetina and Naja oxiana belonging to 4 families and one species of turtles, Testudo horsfieldii, were collected, recognized and reported from the area. We used Jaccard index for studying the similarity of lizard fauna between Khajeh Protected Area and 13 physiogeographical areas of Iran. Our results show that Khajeh Protected Area has the highest similarity index with Kopet Dagh and The Sistan Basin, respectively.

Sitta tephronota has three subspecies in Iran: S. t. obscura, S. t. tephronota and S. t. dresseri, with the latter occurring with very gradual variation in plumage in Zagros Mountains. Despite our knowledge about plumage variation, morphometrical variation in this subspecies is little known. In this study, we investigated geographical variation of the subspecies with four populations from Zagros Mountain (Esfahan, Fars, Kermanshah and Markazi). We measured 14 primary variable and 10 calculated ratios for comparison in univariate and multivariate analyses using Minitab and Past programs. Univariate test revealed that nine characteristics were significantly different among the four populations (p<0.05). Morphological matrices were analyzed by Principal Components Analysis (PCA), CVA and MANOVA. Result indicated that Fars population is different from Markazi population.

This study concerns the relationships among 40 taxa belonging to 13 sections of the genus Vicia occurring in Iran using chromosomal (mitotic) studies. Based on the results of this study, there are 37 diploid (2n=10, 12 and 14) and 3 tetraploid (2n=28) taxa for the flora of Iran. Based on these observations three basic chromosome numbers (x=5, 6 and 7) were determined in the Iranian gene pool of Vicia. There are some ploidy reports for V. cracca and V. villosa subsp. dasycarpa in the world but in this study just has been seen diploid cytotypes in Iran. Most of karyotypes in the genus showed submetacentric (sm.) (54.38%), subtelocentric (st.) (26.31%), metacentric (14.38%) and telocentric (3.15%) chromosomes which mostly longest and shortest ones are submetacentric and subtelocentric, respectively. Stebbins’ karyotype classes were of 2A, 3A, 4A, 3B and 4B which in this system are considered as relatively primitive and therefore symmetrical karyotypes. Highest value of TF% (37.57) and lowest value of A1 (0.39) belonged to V. narbonensis as symmetrical karyotype and highest value of A1 (0.82) and highest value of TF% (13.15) belonged to V. michauxii as asymmetrical karyotype in Iran.

Genus Fritilaria comprises 18 species including two recently described species in Iran. Despite of new reports published and new taxa described available information on vegetation locations, status of their natural populations and taxonomy are not updated since publication of Flora iranica. Taxonomic status of the genus in Iran is reviewed here, and the floristic inventories during 24 years and the localities reported by Flora iranica are used along with available literature as well as our recent collections, in order to update the distribution maps of Fritillaria species in Iran. Fritillaria crassifolia subsp. polunini (from Kurdistan) and F. pinardii (from W-Azerbayjan) are reported as new records for Iran. Suggestions are made for conservation of some Fritillaria species based on the status of their distribution in Iran.

Due to long term of foggy situation and cloud accumulations in the upper mountain belt and inaccessible places of the Hyrcanian forests, there are still some particular and specific habitats and plants which should be studied carefully. In this paper, beside to introducing a new record of the genus Pyrola (P. minor) for the flora of Iran, its specific habitat in south of Babol (Mazandaran) is explained. The genus Pyrola holds included already two species in Iran, P. secunda and P. rotundifolia. Habitat of the study area is characterized by occurrence of some endangered and rare species (such as: Lilium ledebouri) within very humid and upper-mountain orient beach forests and species-rich rocks. We suggest that the area is considered by the Department of Environment of Iran as part of protected forest reserve in the upper altitudes of the Hyrcanian area.

The genus Thymus is investigated to find the best morphologically differentiating characters in Northeast of Iran. In this study, we examined more than 480 herbarium and field-collected specimens from different populations and measured 34 quantitative and qualitative (vegetative and generative) characters. The results of the multivariate analysis (principal component analysis) and nonparametric Test (K independent samples) indicated that the morphological characters such as number of pair lateral vein and aristati and ciliate of upper lobe calyx differentiate the species under study. For the first time, the taxa Thymus fedtschenkoi, T. linearis subsp. linearis, T. kotschyanus var. eriophorus, T. carmanicus and T. kotschyanus var. glabrescens and T. eriocalyx, are reported for the flora of Khorassan provinces. In Flora of Turkey, T. kotschyanus var. glabrescens is a valid taxon, but in Flora iranica this variety is synonymed under T. eriocalyx.
